Chania can be easily reached either by airplane (Chania International Airport "Ioannis Daskalogiannis"; IATA: CHQ) or by ferry boat from Pireaus (Souda Bay).


By airplane

Destination CHQ (Chania International Airport "Ioannis Daskalogiannis")

The Chania International Airport, "Ioannis Daskalogiannis" (IATA: CHQ), is an international airport, located near Souda Bay on the peninsula of Akrotiri, 15 km from the city of Chania.

The airport hosts domestic flights to and from Athens and Thessaloniki (operated by Aegean Airlines and RYANAIR).

Domestic flights from and to the airport of Athens (Athens International Airport “Eleftherios Venizelos”) are often used as connecting flights from and to major European and worldwide gateway cities. Travelers from outside Europe can break up their journey in a European city of their choice or elect to keep connection time to a minimum. Such itineraries may also involve a flight connection through the airport of Athens. During high season (April to early November) there are also many charter flights from across Europe in addition to the low cost airlines RYANAIR & EasyJet.

Important note: The second airport in Crete (Heraklion International Airport-"Nikos Kazantzakis"; IATA: HER) is located in the other major city of Crete which is 140 km away from the city of Chania (approx. two-hour’s drive). 


By ferry boat 

The port of Souda offers 1 boat trip from and to Piraeus (Athens) every day. The port is situated 7 km away from the city center. The boat trip timetable can be found at the official website of the Ferry Boat Company: ANEK LINES.

Ground Transportation

From Chania airport you can reach the city of Chania either by bus or taxi.

From the Chania bus station other buses for Platanias area are available.

The taxi stand is located just outside the passenger terminal and taxis are available 24 hours a day.

Visa Requirements

Greece follows the EU Schengen Agreement provisions concerning short term visa issues. No visa is required for most countries, including US passport holders. Non-EU passport holders: The list of countries requiring (or not) a visa can be found at the website of the Hellenic Republic Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
